PostSubject: Assignment 1: Camping. Group A : Skye, Amerix & Walters, Brooke    Assignment 1: Camping. Group A : Skye, Amerix & Walters, Brooke EmptyMon Jan 12, 2015 12:18 am

Welcome to your first assignment. As you spend this weekend in the forest remember that you will be tested on your determination, creativity, and leadership skills. By that I do not mean that you will be bossing each other around. But rather than you take advantage of your strengths. I've paired you based on what you've shown so far, and I hope you don't disappoint me.

You will not have your wand with you to protect you. The reason I do this is because field work is hard, and you won't always have your wand to make it easier. Quite the opposite, often times it can be a hindrance. But despite not having your wand, you will have the items as followed:

    - One tent each: You will be expected to build the tent with the instructions given. (I've charmed the tents to be warm inside to spare you some inconvenience).
-One sleeping bag each: To keep you warm during the winter nights.
-One canteen of water : Be smart about using it. It will not refill, you will be asked to look for water on your own.
    - One map to share. The map locates places that have fresh water, as well as some places where I've hidden extra cans of food for your group. Most importantly it has the location where we will meet up on Sunday. It's a long trek so remember to not get lost. As I said there are limited cans for you to share, and I would suggest being smart about portioning them out if you don't take the option of looking for them.
-Swiss Army Knife: used for multiple ways, such as opening cans, to sharpening objects.
-One box of matches: Surprise! I took pity on each and everyone of of you and gave you a box of matches to use. Be smart about it and don't get them wet.

Here are some suggestions. Pick a high ground before setting up a sleeping area. Remove the snow if you can, or cover the ground to prevent yourself from feeling too much chill. Travel by daylight, before the night falls make sure to have a fire going. And communicate with one another, communication is key.

Lastly, I want you to remember that if at any part of this experience you feel uncomfortable, unsafe and wish to go back home, send a flare into the sky and I will come and get you.

    Good luck.

    -Dorian Ashworth

OOC: You will be posting below about your experience during the weekend. It is expected that it will be two nights in the woods (Friday night and Saturday night), with Sunday afternoon/evening [depending on your group] to meet up and start lesson 3. You have till the end of the month IRL to finish this topic. If I see that more than one group needs and extension, this will continue on till lesson 3. PM me with any questions or if you see me in the cb, feel free to. Don't godmod, and try to be as realistic as possible. Thanks.

Once their groups were assigned, Brooke immediately turned to move towards Amerix, smiling at the witch. "Hey! Looks like we're stuck together," she joked, moving towards the nearest pile of stuff and looking it over. "Do you have experience with Swiss knives?" she asked, picking it up and holding it towards the witch. "Because I do, but not a lot. If you have, I think it's best you take it."

It was straight to business for Brooke, who wanted to find a good camping ground as soon as they could; small talk could be saved for later. For now, it was important they started working together, and while Brooke was coming on strong, she honestly didn't really mean to be bossy, and fully expected Amerix to chime in at any point of time.

"Also, how strong are you? I mean, like, can you carry your tent and sleeping bag alright?" she continued, frowning slightly. Normally she would just rely on magic to get those to where she wanted, but since their wands were taken... She was fairly certain she would be able to manage hers - thank Merlin her dad introduced her and Tristan to doing some things the Muggle way.

Turning to smile at Amerix, she opened the map and gestured to it. "So, where do you reckon we should go? Or do first..." Waiting for the other witch to reply, she grinned to herself. This was definitely going to be awesome.

Amerix inwardly rejoiced when she heard she was going to be paired up with Brooke. They were miles apart in their personalities and character traits and yet she was quite sure they could work well together. Brooke was talkative and open and Amerix was the complete opposite. It was good that way because if she were paired with another quiet student, it would make for a very awkward two nights in the woods.

Amerix grinned at Brooke's seemingly endless train of sentences and questions. It amused her the way the other witch just went on and on. Let's see how you cope with two nights of endless talking, Amerix. You're gonna be so irritated by tomorrow night a voice in her head nagged. I'm gonna be fine she argued back. We'll see was the answer.

"I don't have much experience with Swiss knives but I could keep it if you like," she replied taking the knife from Brooke. "And about carrying my stuff, I can handle that fine. My family and I used to have an annual trek into the woods during the holidays and we had to carry our own things too," Amerix said, picking up a sleeping bag and tent, slinging the one over her shoulder and tucking the other under her arm. She slipped the Swiss knife into her pocket together with the box of matches.

"Perhaps we should do what the professor says. Pick a high ground and settle for the night," Amerix suggested in reply to Brooke's last question. "We can look for water and food in the morning. Is that reasonable?"

Nodding at Amerix took the knife, Brooke smiled a little more. In all honestly, if she had been the one to take it, she couldn't have ensured her safety - or the safety of the other witch. While she was quite sure she would be fine using it if and when the time came, to actually carry it on her constantly would be... not the smartest thing to do. Of course, she said nothing aloud, not wanting to worry her partner, if it had been Joe or Cassana they would already be joking around about losing a finger or something like that, but Brooke didn't know Amerix well enough to be making these sort of statements, even if she didn't mean them seriously.

And, in any case, she was thankful that it wasn't either of her two closest friends that she was partnered with - while a weekend in the woods sounded like a fantastic idea, without their wands to assist them, she was fairly certain they would end up, well, doing what they'd did best... Which usually involved being clumsy. What with pocket knives and flares and matches... Why, if she had been put with Cassana or Joe, they would either end up severely injured or burn down the entire forest!

"Awesome! This makes things easier, then," she commented happily, also grabbing her items. "I go camping with my dad, too. It's his idea of father daughter time. There's a place near our house - well, on our property, to be exact - and sometimes when he's not too busy we spend a night or two there. Always with our wands, though, although as a Muggle-born, he teaches me some of the things he did with his dad." She paused, chuckling a little. "Usually, though, my family spends our weekends in the treehouse - we built that by hand, dad, Tristan, and me. It's magically charmed on the inside, though, so I doubt that experience would help me much today!"

Shrugging lightly, she nodded at the suggestion. "Yes, that sounds perfect! We'll find a place to camp, build a fire, and pitch our tents. We should have enough food for two or three meals, and I uh, have a small bottle of water with me, although not a lot. If we have time, we can plan for our trip tomorrow. That sound good?"

Looking over over the map, she frowned in thought for a few moments, making sure there was enough space for Amerix to also see it. A few moments later, she pointed to a space a short distance from where they were. "I'm not the best at reading maps, but this looks to be about half an hours walk, and shouldn't take too long. I mean, you said you have experience with trekking, right?" Turning her head to smile at the other witch, Brooke put the map in her hands and walked to the rest of the items. Unfolding her sleeping bag, she stuffed the cans of food inside, before rolling it back up and tying it firmly.

Hoisting it onto her back, she motioned towards the forest. "Shall we? I can keep the map if you want me to?" she asked, impatient to start. They needed all the rest they could get for the next day, that she was sure of.

Amerix was more than excited for this experience. She thought Professor Ashworth was a genius for organising this camping trip. But Amerix was not one to outwardly display her feelings. Excitement, happiness, contentment were shown with a simple smile while her insides were screaming and jumping up and down. Anger, sadness, frustration were shown by a tiny purse of the lips when within her was a volcano erupting at its maximum potential. If forced to speak, a plain one or two word answer usually sufficed.

So to her, it was quite comical the way Brooke just rattled off like a train without brakes. It brought a smile to her face and lightheartedness to her spirit. For one that was always somber, it was refreshing to meet one who was always cheerful. Indeed, she could read Brooke's emotions from the expressions on her face and in her eyes and feel the excitement radiating off her. Amerix however, had made it a habit to keep a close guard on her reactions, maintaining a cool and calm exterior, not letting anyone get an easy read on her feelings.

She nodded and smile as Brooke recounted her experiences with her father. As the only child, she received quite a lot of attention from her dad and it always cheered her up when she recollected fond memories of the times they spent together. "Yea. I feel somehow naked without my wand. The professor is really testing us to see what we can and cannot do," Amerix commented. When Brooke mentioned Tristan, Amerix was a little confused. Who was Tristan? This was her first time hearing that name mentioned.

"Tristan? Who's Tristan," she asked taking the risk of inquiring. She knew that some people didn't like it when they were questioned about their acquaintances. But if Brooke mentioned it, it shouldn't be a problem right?

"Yes, that sounds perfect! We'll find a place to camp, build a fire, and pitch our tents. We should have enough food for two or three meals, and I uh, have a small bottle of water with me, although not a lot. If we have time, we can plan for our trip tomorrow. That sound good?"

"Yup," Amerix replied peeking over Brooke's shoulder at the map. She spotted a place that could work for them to set up tents. Just as she was about to point it out, Brooke saw it too.

"Well, it depends on how fast we walk. And don't get your hopes up about my trekking abilities. My dad navigates and I just follow and enjoy the air and scenery," Amerix said as she watched Brooke pack the cans into the sleeping bag. [i]Now, that was creative{/i] she thought.

"No problem. You can keep it. That place should be in that direction," she said, pointing slightly north east of where they were currently standing. "Let's go."

Her boots made soft crunching noises on the snow and fallen leaves. It was almost like a melodic rhythm to her ears as she walked steadily keeping a look out for anything that would help or hinder them.

With a chuckle of agreement, Brooke nodded. "He is, isn't he?" she asked, smiling a little. She had never been one to hide her emotions - it was quite possible that she didn't even know how to do that - and the awe that tinted her voice was obvious even to her. "I honestly really like it, though," she continued, shrugging lightly. "I mean, it feels like a challenge, like a dare. And I don't ever back down from those. It's like.. Oh, I don't know how to explain but it's quite a nice change, to have to do things the Muggle way."

At the question, she grinned. "My brother. He's in his sixth year at Hogwarts." There was no point in mentioning that he was adopted, although the entire family was open about it. Tristan was a Walters, and nothing would change that, and despite his origins being a mystery none of them really cared. All that mattered was that he was a part of their family; even Tristan himself did not bother with his past.

Waving away the witch's 'warning', Brooke grinned. "Well, lucky for you my dad taught me to read maps. Unlikely, I'm not overly talented in that area, but this seems like a straightforward map, so I think we're good to go." Smiling sincerely, she took back the map and folded it, slipping it into her own sling bag. Thank Merlin she had decided to bring it and not one of her other ones; the charms that were on this current one assured her that nothing inside could fall out or get lost. It had been one of the best presents her dad had ever given her.

Following the direction that Amerix pointed towards, Brooke started walking, pulling the hood of her jacket up to protect her ears from the cold, and keep the snow out of her eyes. Pausing every so often to check the map, she adjusted her path a few times. Not really talking much during the walk, wanting to conserve energy, Brooke instead made light comments such as, "Careful, it's really slippery here," or "There's a branch there, I almost tripped."

About 40 minutes later, they arrived in a small clearing, covered in snow but otherwise a perfect location to set up camp. Brushing off the white powder from a nearby rock, Brooke set her stuff down and turned to survey the site. "So, what do you think, Amerix?" she asked, panting just a little from the longer-than-expected walk.

Amerix just nodded and listened as Brooke kept talking. She had nothing else to say, being one who rarely commented on anything unless she felt like it. It highly amused her the way Brooke would speak out warnings over things they came across. She would be the perfect mother she thought to herself. Amerix didn't really look out that much for other people. It wasn't that she didn't care, it was just that she was used to being independent, doing things herself. She'd grown up that way and it had become a habit, a habit that might not be too good. Sure it was useful when she was by herself and had to take care of things on her own now that her parents were miles away and yet people seemed to think that she cared for herself and herself only. Oh well, you can't please everybody.

Lost in her thoughts and daydreams, it took her a while to realise that they had reached the camping spot. It was small spacious enough for two tents to be set up with enough room left over to build a small fire. Overhanging tree branches sheltered them a little from the wind.

"It's perfect," she replied, setting her tent down. "I'm going to pitch my tent first. Then we can build a fire and discuss our plans for tomorrow. How does that sound?"

Nodding as the witch talked, Brooke absent-mindedly played with the ring on her fourth finger of her left hand. It had become a habit, despite it only being a few weeks old, and she felt quite naked without it. But, she didn't want to lose it or anything like that and so, with a soft sigh, she slid it off her finger. Opening a separate compartment inside her bag, she made sure it was sitting comfortably before zipping it firmly shut. There was no way she would - or could - lose it now, unless she lost her entire bag. Making a promise to never part with it, ever, she gathered her stuff once again.

"That sounds like a brilliant plan," she said, beginning to open the pack that the tent was stored in, before pausing. "Oh, wait, we should clear up the snow first, like Professor Ashworth suggested," she added. Looking around, she found a few broken branches nearby and used one as a make-shift broom, clearing away as much snow as she could.

After they were done, she dumped out the stuff, not bothering with anything methodical. "Thank Merlin!" she exclaimed, smiling to herself. "These are the easier ones. I was half expecting a ridiculously complicated type. Instructions are clear, too..." Reading the paper over, she gave a little grin, and began setting up the tent. Not too long later, she finished, and turned towards Amerix. "You good? Or do you need a hand?" she asked.

Amerix noticed the slight reluctance shown on Brooke's face when she debated taking off her ring. She put it in her bag so it looked like keeping it safe won over wearing it. Amerix didn't know that feeling, the feeling of being treasured by someone who loved you fully. Sure she had an ex-boyfriend but that was different. She thought he loved her, thought she meant the world to him as he said countless times and yet how naive she was back then. He had only wanted her for her body, nothing else.

She smiled wryly as she set up her tent. She doubted she could ever be in the kind of relationship Brooke had with her boyfriend, now fiance. Being loved by someone and loving someone made you vulnerable to be hurt by that very person and Amerix thought that her heart was beat up enough as it is. It had taken her long enough to fix it back after it broke into a million pieces that she wouldn't ever risk getting it shattered again.

She was so lost in her thoughts that it took some time for her brain to register the question Brooke asked her.

"I'm good," she replied, jamming the end of the last pole into the ground so that the wind wouldn't blow it away in the middle of the night. "Know how to start a fire?" she asked smiling as she began scouting the area for dry twigs they could use. She'd started a fire countless times and it excited her to do it again.

"Know how to start a fire?"

Pausing a few moments to think - which already was not a good sign - she shook her head slightly. "Not without my wand or a match. But we have the latter, so we're good." She smiled as the Amerix started looking around, going off in the opposite direction to help, while still staying within close range. The last thing she wanted to do was get lost and have to send up the flair. "Well, I mean, I know the theory of how to start one without matches, but I've never done it before. What about you?" she added, raising her voice only slightly louder to cover the distance.

Picking out the driest twigs she could find, she walked back to the space between their two tents. Tilting her head in thought, she let out a "Ohhh!" moments later, and then clarified by saying, "I have my notebook in my bag - we could use a sheet of paper as a starting point, or as kindle, since I doubt we'd find any dry leaves in all this snow."

Placing the branches down, she reached into her handbag (that she was becoming more and more glad that she had brought with her) and took out her journal, tearing out a page. Keeping it back, she turned to Amerix and smiled again. "Why don't you have the honour?" she joked, holding it out towards her.

The question brought fond memories to Amerix's mind. "Well, both my mom and my uncle are Muggles and every year when we go camping, they would insist on starting a fire the Muggle way. I'd watch them and when I was old enough, they let me try. Ever since then, I'm kind of addicted to starting the fire each year. There's something about watching a small flame grow into a big one," she replied with a soft smile. That was probably the most she'd said since starting this journey.

Once she had an armload of twigs both small and medium, she dumped them on the ground. She cleared a small circle of snow and arranged rocks around it before arranging the kindling inside. At Brooke's suggestions, her smile grew. "That's a great idea," she said. She herself had been wondering how to start it without some tinder.

As Amerix took the piece of paper from Brooke, her heart broke a little. She felt bad that Brooke had to tear out a page from her journal, but..they had no choice right? She put the paper near the center of the kindling and took the matches out of her pocket. She struck one and carefully lit the paper before blowing out the match. After all, she didn't want to start a forest fire. Very very gently, she blew on the mini flame and watched as it grew, slowing adding larger pieces of wood using the largest of all to form a tepee over everything. Nodding satisfactorily at the fire, she grabbed a small rock, pulled it to face the fire and sat down.

"So...let's plan for tomorrow. What shall we do first?"

Listening as Amerix spoke, Brooke couldn't help but realize that she was beginning to talk a lot more. Their first meet had been not a lot of talking on the behalf of the other witch, and to hear more about her was nice. She chuckled a little, realizing if anyone had heard just that last part it would sound a bit arsonist-like, if not for the context. "I only know how to use matches. My dad tried to teach me to do it with two pieces of wood but..." Here she paused to giggle before continuing. "..But he failed so badly. In the end he taught me the theory, because he couldn't get the fire to start without matches. Of course, he swears he has done it before." With another giggle, she shrugged. "But whatever. I never thought I'd actually need that information."

Watching Amerix start the fire, Brooke simply waited, not saying anything till the witch was done. Using the bag that the tent had come in as a cover, she sat down on the ground, hoping that in the very least, the material was waterproof. When she didn't feel any wetness on the bottom of her pants, she fully relaxed. "Well, I think we should go after water, and food. Those are the two musts for survival. But, at the same time, we need to start making our way to the designated spot. From what I saw on the map, it's pretty dang far. We should cover as much ground as we can, when we can."

Grabbing the sleeping bag next to her, she unrolled it and passed a few cans to Amerix. "Should we have a light dinner as we discuss?" she asked, examining the cover of said cans to see just what kind of food they had been given.

Wow, Brooke sure is giggly. I don't think I've ever met anyone who giggles that much was Amerix's immediate thought as Brooke spoke. There was no doubt that they were complete polar opposites. It was refreshing but Amerix's only fear was that it would get on her nerves. If they were so different there would be certain times when their ideas were sure to clash. Amerix would definitely give way. She always did to keep the peace but she was afraid that would damage their friendship.

Nodding as Brooke suggested their schedule for the next day, she took the can offered to her. The place where they had to meet up was quite far. They would have to wake up early and make the most of daylight which was not much now that it was winter. If they were fortunate, they would have enough light to see their way until around four or five in the afternoon.

"We can look for food and water on our way to the meeting point," Amerix replied as she took one can. "And we're gonna have to get up early," she continued, opening a can of tuna. "Are you an early riser? I'm definitely not." Amerix could sleep until noon if she didn't set an alarm clock. But that was because she slept late. If Brooke also couldn't wake up early, they would be in trouble.

"Yes, agreed, if there are any on the way. If not, I honestly think we should take a slight detour. Food is important if we are going to have to walk a lot," she added, scanning the cans beside her and selecting one. Baby carrots, while not being something she particularly fancied, was not all too bad. "Here, pass me the knife, would you? We can have tuna and carrots for dinner," she added, chuckling lightly. "I honestly never thought I'd find myself saying that."

At the mention of waking up, Brooke's eyes went wide. She had, frankly, not thought of that. "Merlin's beard," she muttered. "I'm not either, to be honest." Pausing a moment to think, she sighed. "Dang it, I should have brought my iPod with me. That way, we at least have a Muggle alarm to help us."

A few moments later, Brooke shrugged. "Okay, I honestly have no idea, but I normally wake up at around seven every morning, except for weekends. Hopefully my body would be trained and I'll wake up around that time tomorrow. If I do, I'll wake you up. We can have breakfast and wait till we have just a little more light before setting off, if that works for you?"

Amerix listened and nodded as Brooke talked. As she passed the knife over, a thought struck her. What if they for some reason got separated? Amerix thought it was highly unlikely but it was better to be cautious than risk getting lost since only one of them had the map. When Brooke mentioned her iPod, Amerix nearly laughed. Brooke had already thought to bring so many things. She had a flashlight, an extra water bottle a notebook and Merlin knew what else! Amerix had only brought her wand and now she didn't even have it with her.

"We can have breakfast and wait till we have just a little more light before setting off, if that works for you?"

"Sure," Amerix replied. "Hey, I just thought of something. What if we get separated? There's almost a zero chance of that happening but just in case. Maybe we can meet somewhere, like a land mark or something."

Taking the knife with a soft word of thanks, Brooke neatly cut open the can and passed it back to the other witch. "Hmm, we need plates - or makeshift ones, at least," she commented, looking around. Not seeing anything they could use, she added, "Or we could just eat from the cans.. Up to you. I'm good either way."

At the question, her eyes went wide. "Oh, that's a brilliant catch - I didn't think of that! I don't think that would happen, though. I mean, we're walking as a team not spreading out, but I suppose a back-up plan is good. Always prepare for the unexpected..." Taking out the map from her bag, she unfolded it and studied it for a few moments, before moving to sit next to Amerix.

Pointing to the long stretch of blue, she looked towards the other witch. "How about at the river? Then we follow it downstream and leave marks along the way so that we know who is in front or behind? I mean, if we do get lost, I'm the only one who has the map, and the meeting point is here," she paused to press a finger to the marked spot. "And I think for now we should make our way to the river and just follow it until it's time to head East... Unless we detour to get food, of course." Looking back at Amerix, she raised her eyebrows and smiled, silently asking for her opinion and suggestions.

Amerix chuckled when Brooke spoke of plates. Unless they tore bark from trees, sew leaves together or if the professor was kind enough to provide plates later on, they would be eating with their hands and fingers out of the can. "We'll eat from the cans. We have to use our fingers though, I don't think the professor gave us utensils."

Shifting a little over to give Brooke room to sit, Amerix studied the area to which Brooke pointed and listened attentively as Brooke spoke. "That's excellent," Amerix wholeheartedly agreed with the girl. "I'll probably make marks with the knife on trees beside the river, maybe like an 'A' or something."

After eating until she was satisfied, well as satisfied as she could be with a dinner of tuna and carrots, she cleaned herself up as best as she could given that she didn't have toothbrush or toothpaste using water to clean her mouth instead. "Well, I'm going to turn in so that I can be well rested and wake up early tomorrow. Hopefully," she said. "Goodnight!"

Heading into the tent, she grinned. She was so excited for tomorrow. It certainly as going to be the experience of a lifetime for her and even though she was somewhat used to camping, she was now doing it with just one other person instead of with her whole family. She was going to have a blast. Settling into the sleeping bag, she combed out her hair with her fingers, curled up into a comfortable position and drifted off into a peaceful slumber.

Shrugging at the notion of eating with their fingers, Brooke already began to tuck in. "Not a problem for me. I don't really care either way," she commented offhandedly. For her, it truly didn't make a difference; as long as she got to eat, she didn't mind how. Cleanliness or proper utensils never truly bothered her, and it made it very easy for her parents to travel with her; they often took holidays in new places with exotic foods, and both of their children found no qualms about trying them.

"That sounds like a plan," she agreed. "Okay, and we'll keep going till.. Hmm.. There's a bridge further down, over here," she continued, again pointing to a little diagram on the map. "Should we agree to meet here? So that way, we can continue together and make our way towards the end goal..." Tracing a path that led away from the river and to the red flag that indicated where they were meant to regroup, she turned to look at Amerix with a smile.

The rest of the meal went by rather quietly, and Brooke spent that time just thinking, her mind wandering from thing to thing, person to person. She couldn't wait for this to be over, simply so she could tell Joe and Cassana all about it, for she was sure they'd enjoy the tale. But for now, she was going to have so much fun - that she was certain of.

Nodding at Amerix, Brooke voiced an agreement. "Oh, for sure. I'm turning in, too. I'll wake you up if I'm up first, and you'll do the same?" she asked. Saying her good nights, she went to her own tent, glad to find that their Professor had kept his word, and that they were indeed warm inside. At this rate, she didn't need her sleeping bag, and instead used it as a makeshift pillow, making sure that the tent door was zipped up firmly, lest insects found their way into the warmth.

Falling asleep within minutes, it wasn't until much later that she awoke. Blinking the sleep out of her eyes, she sat up, hand reaching up to find her hair in tangles. With a sigh, she focused and felt it retreating into her head, and then, grew it back out moments later. Smiling to herself, she thanked Merlin once again for her abilities and opened the flap to her tent, stepping outside and pulling her jacket tighter over herself. In the distance, there was a very small light, indicating that dawn was just happening. Stretching, she took in the crisp morning air and just bathed in the noise of the forest for a few moments before going to wake up her friend.

Standing outside the other tent, she called out, "Amerix! It's time to wake up now, come on. We have a long day!"

Amerix agreed to the plan to meet at the bridge. It would be a good place for one to wait for the other if they ever got lost. She consented to wake Brooke up if she happened to wake up first. Amerix highly doubted that. She was a heavy sleeper, often sleeping through her the alarms she would set and rushing to get ready for class the next morning.

She was startled awake the next morning by Brooke's call. Groaning, she fell back onto her sleeping bag and closed her eyes feeling very much like throwing a tantrum for having to get up early. Come on, Amerix. Get up! her brain yelled at her relaxed muscles. Five more minutes? she bargained. No! was the reply. Two more minutes? she negotiated. What difference does that make. Just get up!

Amerix sighed as she pushed the sleeping bag away and called out a "Coming!" to Brooke to let her know she was awake. Seriously, if anybody could hear the amount of times she argued with herself, she would probably be put into a mental asylum. Folding up her sleeping bag neatly, she tried to comb out her thick long hair with her fingers as best as she could. Knowing it would still be a mess, she decided to just braid it up instead.

Exiting the tent she greeted a good morning to Brooke and took a couple of mouthfuls of water to wash away the ickiness of the night. She relit the fire then rummaged through some of the cans to see what they could have for breakfast.

"Shall we have breakfast first? Then we can start. I need to refill my canteen though so we should probably look for the water place," Amerix said, looking at Brooke for her response.

Smiling at her friend as she emerged from the tent, Brooke stretched, already moving to her tent to begin packing as Amerix started the fire. At the suggestion, she stopped, tent half taken down, and nodded. Over her shoulder, she called, "That sounds great! Pick out something and open it, I'll be right there. I can do your tent as well."

A few minutes later, the bags sat next to each girl as they quietly ate their food. It wasn't a very good one, consisting of some soup that Amerix had heated over the fire, and they ate in the cans from the previous night, but it was warm food nevertheless. In a moment of inspiration, Brooke had gathered some nearby snow and used the now-empty can to melt it over the fire, giving them some (hopefully) clean water to last until they found a proper source of water. Not wasting time, the moment they finished, they used some snow to put out their fire, making sure that no ambers remained before grabbing their bags. Brooke had kept the map in her own personal bag, so they didn't need to carry it around or have to dig for it when they wanted it.

The walk was a fairly long one, and the two didn't converse much, instead saving their energy for the walk. Stopping only a few times to check the map and or to take a water break, it wasn't till the sun was almost directly above them that they were too tired to walk for much longer. Luckily, there was a small clearing nearby, and Brooke and Amerix started towards there, starving and tired, for a short lunch break.

Assignment 1: Camping. Group A : Skye, Amerix & Walters, Brooke Empty
PostSubject: Re: Assignment 1: Camping. Group A : Skye, Amerix & Walters, Brooke    Assignment 1: Camping. Group A : Skye, Amerix & Walters, Brooke EmptyTue Feb 24, 2015 11:54 pm

Weariness was beginning to set in Amerix’s limbs, especially her legs. She’d been walking together with Brooke for a couple of hours now and she could feel herself start to perspire a little from the exertion even though it was winter. Her tent and sleeping bag were weighing heavy on her shoulders and she was sure they would be aching come nightfall. Although she wasn’t the fittest of girls, she did do regular jogs so her stamina was good but her muscles were starting to complain. As well as her stomach.

As they reached the clearing, Amerix patted her pocket to ensure that she still had the Swiss knife and box of matches with her and smiled when she felt the bulge in them. She spotted a cave that would shelter them from the wind and directed Brooke towards it. They could build a fire, have some lunch, rest a while and continue on. The thought of rest and food (even if it was just tuna, sardines, soup, baked beans and the like) spurred her feet on toward the cave. It’s entrance was partially hidden by bushes and a few branches so Amerix pushed them aside. Her eyes were greeted by darkness but she could tell that it was a spacious cave. It smelled terrible though and Amerix wrinkled her nose.

She reached into her pocket, intending to strike a match so it would at least give her a glimpse of what was inside. The small flame brought into view a patch of fur, a pair of ears, sharp teeth and a pair of tiny beady eyes. She stood paralysed at the sight as the creature heaved its large brown body up on four legs, its jaw open, its eyes staring at her. The burning of fire on her fingers snapped her to her senses and she screamed out to Brooke, “Run, Brooke! Bear!”

Fear and adrenaline pumped through her veins, lending strength and speed to her weary legs. She didn’t look back but kept her attention straight ahead hoping that Brooke was right behind her and that the bear wasn’t chasing them. Trees whipped past her the low branches scratching her cheeks and drawing blood. She kept running, her feet churning up the snow until nothing but silence greeted her ears. And then she stopped, panting heavily as the sound of rushing blood filling her ears. Good news: the bear wasn’t anywhere in sight. Bad news: Brooke was also nowhere in sight.

“Brooke?” Amerix called out tentatively. When she received no answer, she called out louder. “Brooke? Brooke!”

Amerix turned round and round trying to see if she could spot the other girl. There was nothing but trees, nothing but silence. Her heart filled with a different kind of fear. Besides being alone, she was lost. She didn’t have the map with her and she didn’t know where she was.

Don’t panic, Amerix. Think. Use your brain. They must have separated unintentionally when they ran from the bear. She was sure that she heard footsteps following her for a short while meaning that Brooke also ran. How did they get separated? No, that was not the question to ask. First, she had to figure out where she was and find the other girl. The river! That was where they agreed to meet if they ever got separated. Amerix thanked Merlin that they had discussed that. Now, all she had to do was figure out which direction to go.

She closed her eyes and tried to picture the map in her head. If only I had photographic memory. Concentrating all her energy on picturing the map, she felt relieved when she vaguely saw the line of the river, then where they were the night before and the direction they were heading in. Biting her bottom lip, she tried to tangent out the possible direction she had run but it was fruitless. She didn’t know which direction was north, south, east or west but she did know the river flowed south. Sighing, she opened her eyes again trying to push down the rising panic. Panicking will not help you at all. She tried using her ears to see is she was anywhere near the river but all she heard were birds cheerfully twitting away and the occasional rustle of leaves as the breeze whistled through the trees.

She wracked her brain trying to think of means to determine where she was. She could wait for the sun to set. That would tell her where west was but it would take way too long and it would be dangerous to make her way through the woods at night. Not to mention her water supply was running low. She had to start now if she wanted to reach the river before dark. She glanced around, not really knowing what she was looking for. Her eyes roved over the leaves, twigs and branches scattered around. Wait. Branches It clicked in her mind. She could use the branches and get her direction from the shadow the sun cast using the method her dad taught her.

Amerix rejoiced when she found a long straight branch. She stuck it into the ground and marked the point of the shadow with a small stone. She waited with bated breath and watched until the shadow moved about eight inches. She marked the new tip with another stone and drew a line in the snow straight through both marks. That was the east-west line. Standing with the first stone on her left and the second stone on her right, she stared straight at what would be north. She grinned. Thanks, dad!

Closing her eyes yet again, she pictured the path of the river. If she always head north, she would definitely not miss it. With lightness in her heart and determination in her soul she walked steadily onwards, keeping her path as straight as possible so she wouldn’t veer off course. She would check she was going the correct way every now and again and correct her direction accordingly.

After about five hours of walking and checking directions, she heard the blessed sound of the river flowing and in a few minutes, it came into view. It was broad with the waters flowing rather rapidly. The sun hung low in the sky, casting an orange hue on everything. Amerix grinned and hurried to the bank, intending to replenish her water supply. What happened next happened so fast that Amerix had no time to react.

The tip of her right boot snagged in the root of a tree causing her to lose her balance and go flailing forward. She tumbled down the incline trying unsuccessfully to get her footing. A few seconds later, water covered her head and filled her mouth as the river carried her downstream. She forced her eyes open struggling not to panic as she kicked her legs, her head popping up just long enough to take a gasp of air and yell for help before tugging her back down. It was cold, so cold that her muscles were getting sluggish, refusing to cooperate with her as she fought the current to get to the bank. She knew how to swim, loved it in fact, but her soaked clothes, tent and sleeping bag were not helping her at all.

Her lungs were burning for oxygen and her eyes were stinging from the cold water and the debris in it. As she struggled to get back to the surface, her fingers brushed against something and she instinctively grasped on to it. Willing her depleted energy to give her one last burst she kicked her legs while pulling on what her hands were holding, she broke the surface and heaved in oxygen. The freezing cold and moving current was making her lose her hold on the overhanging branch that had its tip in the water. She had to move. By sheer determination to survive, she forced her biceps to work as she pulled herself towards the bank, pumping her legs to help her move forward.

When she felt she couldn’t move any longer, her feet felt solid ground and she crawled to the bank, lying down. Amerix was a shivering mess, her limbs shaking from cold and weariness, her heart thumping from the harrowing experience, her teeth chattering as tears leaked out of her eyes. Her brain was screaming at her to get up, to start a fire but her body just wanted to lie there, to fall asleep. She knew if she didn’t get up, she would most definitely freeze to death. After catching her breath, she pushed herself to sit up. Oh no! The matches! Reaching into her pocket and drawing out the matchbox, she confirmed her fear. It was soaked and useless. She just wanted to roll up in a ball and cry.

No. You have to survive! She stayed where she was for a while, trying to replenish her energy. When she could walk on her shaking legs, she searched the river bank desperately, looking for flint. She made sure to stay a safe distance away from the river as her trembling fingers dug through the snow. Her teeth hadn’t stopped chattering from the cold and her legs were beginning to stop working. She tested some of the stones she found with the Swiss knife in her hands, hoping and hoping that there would be sparks. When she was rewarded with sparks, she almost cried with joy.

Almost robotically, she gathered some tinder and twigs and built a small fire. She collapsed in front of it, taking off her dripping jacket so she could feel more of the heat. That done, she curled up into a ball and gave vent to her crazy emotions, letting the tears slide down her cheeks, grateful that she was alive. She couldn't be bothered that she was starving or thirsty. She had zero energy left to do anything but close her eyes and drift off into slumber.

Assignment 1: Camping. Group A : Skye, Amerix & Walters, Brooke Empty
PostSubject: Re: Assignment 1: Camping. Group A : Skye, Amerix & Walters, Brooke    Assignment 1: Camping. Group A : Skye, Amerix & Walters, Brooke EmptySun Mar 01, 2015 7:28 pm

Following Amerix inside the cave, Brooke slipped out the torch from her bag, turning it on about the same time that Amerix struck a match. Then she froze, staring at the animal in the cave, her mind suddenly gone blank. Almost in slow motion, the torch slipped from her fingers and dropped, landing somewhere on the ground - where, she wasn't exactly sure - and the light went out. A shout caught her attention but she couldn't make out the words; instead, she moved on instinct, turning and running.

All she could hear was the wind rushing past her, and she ran blindly until she couldn't run any longer, finally coming to a complete and abrupt halt when she realized she was lost. Looking around, she realized with a sinking feeling that she could no longer see Amerix, and muttered a, "Crap."

Taking a deep breath, the first thing she did was sit down on a nearby stump, trying to control the panic that was slowly rising. "Okay, what are the facts? Find Amerix.." she paused, giggled a little and smiled to herself. "Find Amerix, join the group.. If only there was a giant to stop!" She knew she would sound odd if anyone passed, but talking out loud calmed her. Humour did too, which explained why she was quoting Into The Woods, one of her and Cassie's favourite movie. "..Just get out of these woods... Well, forest, but whatever." Giggling again, she felt relief wash over her as she added, "I wish Cassana was here to make the puns with me. I need to find Amerix and get out of this darn place so I can tell her!"

Quieting herself, she closed her eyes and listened, hearing the sound of wind and.. was it? Yes, it was! The sound of water nearby, and she jumped up, hurriedly walking towards the noise. They had agreed to meet by the river, and so, she started her walk downstream. Some time later - she wasn't exactly sure, but it felt like hours and hours - Brooke heard the crackling of a fire and saw the smoke through the thickness of some trees. Quickening her pace, she smiled a little when she saw Amerix lying down, but immediate grew concerned when she saw that everything was wet. Gasping, she ran the few steps forward, dropping her bag of items on the floor and already beginning to unzip her own jacket. Throwing it over the sleeping witch, she set about opening the tent, which she knew was charmed to be warm.

Then, she moved to the river and filled their water bottles before using an empty can to heat up some water. After opening a few cans of food, she walked over and gently shook Amerix. "Hey, it's me, Brooke. Come on, wake up and get warm or you could fall terribly sick," she murmured.

PostSubject: Re: Assignment 1: Camping. Group A : Skye, Amerix & Walters, Brooke    Assignment 1: Camping. Group A : Skye, Amerix & Walters, Brooke EmptyMon Mar 02, 2015 5:07 am

Amerix never knew the real meaning of being utterly exhausted. Until now. The adrenaline rush from the ordeal she went through left her body limp and lethargic. She ached everywhere and her head was pounding from Merlin only knew what. Not to mention that the cold had seeped through to her bones making her numb. Although there was a fire crackling right before her, she had slept in the snow which wasn't exactly the wisest decision she had made but she was way too dead tired to set up her tent. It was a miracle that she even managed to set up a fire.

She didn't know how long she'd been unconscious in deep sleep when she heard a distant voice that sounded somewhat familiar but she couldn't quite place. It was urging her to wake up. No, go away. Leave me alone. She didn't want to get up. She didn't want to move. She just wanted to sleep. Her eyelids felt heavy and she just couldn't coax one muscle to move. But the voice didn't let up and it was accompanied with a hand shaking her. It was then her brain processed what was said. Brooke? It looked like the witch had escaped unscathed from the bear and found her.

Amerix cracked one eye open and saw that it was already dark. She closed her eye back and took a deep silent breath. C'mon Amerix. Brooke's found you. Get up and help her. She sighed and ever so slowly opened her eyes and met the concerned glance of the other girl. She made a lackadaisical attempt at to get up and failed. Trying again, she braced both palms on the snow covered ground and heaved herself to a sitting position, getting her eyes to focus on what was going on around her and ignore the incessant hammering in her head. She realised that she was wearing Brooke's jacket and a quick glance around told her that a tent had been set up, a few cans of food open and water heating over the fire. It seemed like Brooke had made sure things would be comfortable before waking her up.

She gave a smile full of gratitude to her and said, "Hey. Looks like you escaped from that bear. Thanks for setting everything up." Her voice was raspy and harsh from not enough water to drink and she grimaced. But she couldn't drink until the water actually boiled. Which reminded her of something else.

"I got the matches wet. We'll have to gather some flint in case they don't work. Sorry," Amerix apologised. She knew it would be more inconvenient to start a fire with flint because sometimes it took more than one try for the sparks to catch flame. It would slow them down a little. Not to mention her muscles were rather banged up.
