The fact that the classes were limited in options for his major frustrated him. No one had taken the job offers that he had sent out, which disappointed him. If field training was one thing, then combat training would only support it. So he took it on, figuring that he would work on hand to hand first, then work towards the magical aspects later. The first lesson would be an integration of what he would have taught in two terms, so it would be heavy on the students. He had sent an owl to every major, telling them of the new course added, so they would know that another opportunity opened.

Wearing his usual work out attire, he waited patiently for everyone to arrive. He didn't even bother with a coat, already knowing that he would get their body heated up through work out.

Having gotten the owl, Arthur walked into the field. He wore shorts, sneakers and a T-shirt like he had last lesson but didn't feel like gelling his hair back today. It was rather short anyway so it wouldn't exactly get in the way, maybe a few bangs would be out of place but that wasn't really a problem.

Wondering how this lesson would be different from the last one Arthur walked towards the training grounds. Looking around he realized that he was the first one there. He took his place. He would just have to wait for the others to arrive.

    "Hello professor," he greeted.

Dressing himself in similar attire like his first lesson, Airen made his way to the arena. He'd noticed the arena early on and had wanted to go on the field a couple of times to practice his own personal training, swordsmanship. From an early age, Airen had had a knack for a combat with the long and time-tested weapon. He had only just finished mastering fencing two summers ago and and karate the summer before that, as he had realized that he wouldn't always have a sword. He had since moved on to learning different styles.

Shaking his head, Airen set his train of thought back on track and took a spot that he felt comfortable with. Crossing his arms, he waited for the lesson to begin.

"Good morning, Professor," Airen greeted politely.

Making his way across the freshly fallen snow on campus, Christian was glad for the layers he'd chosen to wear. He lived off campus, with his folks, so didn't have a way to store things in a dorm or anything. Over his shoulder hung a worn dufflebag, which carried his school books, an extra sweater, and a few other odds and ends that he'd rather not think about. It wasn't very manly to find diapers and picture books along with his workout gear.

    You're at school. Focus.

Zipping up his outer jacket, he caught sight of the training area. Unlike back in Hogwarts, this castle, and it's grounds, seemed easier to navigate. Things appeared to be where one would assume they should.

As he approached the small group gathered in a clearing, it wasn't hard to pick out the professor. He was a bit up there in age, though Christian wouldn't put anything past him. He was teaching an Auror class, after all. Something not done lightly, he assumed. Looking around at the others, though, he shuffled his feet in nervousness. He hoped it wasn't too apparent, but he was a few years older than them. Sure, he didn't know that for certain. But something about these guys gave him the impression that they were fresh outa school. He...well, he was a bit less traditional.

With a look to the professor, he gave a small side-smile, and a soft, "Morning, Professor." He didn't know the man, since he was a late addition to the school. But hopefully it wouldn't be held against him.

Amerix woke up to snow falling gently to the ground. It was winter, her favourite season. It could be dreary sometimes but she loved the snow and loved everything that came with winter. It was almost time for the Auror class to start and Amerix sped up her preparations. She put on light clothing knowing that they would be out in the field for this lesson and knowing they would probably be doing some form of physical activity. She braided the front of the hair into a waterfall head band and pulled the rest into a ponytail.

Taking an extra coat with her, she headed out of the dorm towards the training fields enjoying the sound of crunching snow beneath her shoes. Arriving at the field, she saw there were already a few students gathered there. She greeted the professor as she joined the group. She had started the term late and missed the first class but she hoped she would be able to catch up with them.

The owl that came one evening was a welcomed surprise; a new course would be amazing, despite it meaning extra work. When the title of said course was made available to them, Brooke had practically squeed in delight. While physical combat wasn't something she thought she was particularly good at, the chance to learn was a wonderful opportunity. Still, she could only imagine what Joe would say when he found out she was taking a combat training class. Although she was less clumsy than during her Hogwarts days, she could still be very, very unstable on her feet.

Just last week itself she had tripped on a rock that she jokingly swore 'walked into her' and not the other way around while on a walk by the lake. A bruise was all she took away from the incident, but now to imagine she'd be most likely using actual weapons made her giggle in nervous anticipation. As long as I don't take off a limb or anything like that, she joked to both her boyfriend and room-mate-slash-best-friend... Well, half-joked. She knew if she wasn't careful it was actually a high possibility.

Wearing track pants and a loose t-shirt, over which a simple jacket was zipped, she stepped into the grounds and smiled at the fresh snow. Her breath made tiny puffs of smoke as she made her way down to the training fields. Upon noticing the other students there, she picked up her pace, knowing she wasn't late but still enjoying among the first few to arrive. "Hello Professor!" she greeted happily, moving to stand beside the boy she recognized from potions, and sending a smile to Amerix.

"Hey there, uh, Christian, right?" she said, not too certain if she got his name right.

Combat training, as the owl announced, was the latest addition to the classes available to them, and one thing James was truly looking forward to. Not only did it sound interesting, but James already had some experience with the muggle side of things. As a young child, he had taken lessons on karate as well as jiu-jitsu, although never really appreciated those things. He quit before he got more than a few levels up.

As he grew older, he began to enjoy those sort of things more, frequently getting into fights with his friends, both of the physical kind as well as magical duels. They were usually all for fun, of course, except for the few occasions that involved the sensitive issue of girls. He didn't always win, but those offered him practise, and despite not having proper qualifications, he became a fairly well to do fighter - as long as they were the 'no rules, anything goes' kind.

Joining the group of people, he greeted the Professor before glancing around at the other students. Today was going to be very interesting.

Scarlett Waters could only be described as excited when the owl carrying the letter, outlining the plans for her first ever class in university. She was incredibly excited to become an auror, and finally being able to take this first step on the path towards her dream career, she was ecstatic.

She woke in the morning, fresh-faced and ready, almost jumping out of bed with enthusiasm. She was early to breakfast, and on-time to class, and could hardly wait to start. She walked happily to the field for the lesson, dressed appropriately in tracksuit pants and a black t-shirt, for now wearing a hooded jacket against the cold, and sneakers, knowing that the lesson would consist of physical activity.

"Professor," she acknowledged politely when she arrived, standing with the group.

So far attendance had been going smoothly, no one had arrived too late and he was relieved for that. As they each walked towards the field and greeted him, he sent a nod their way. He took in every detail that each student was wearing as they entered and he noted that many were smart about the class subject and their appearance. Figuring that he'd waited long enough, he clapped his hand signaling it was time to begin.

"Welcome to combat training, if you don't already know me, my name is Dorian Ashworth, your headmaster. You may call me Professor, or Sir, that's about it. Now, can anyone tell me a vital reason for us to teach you combat? Do you already know it? Each of you, try to give me a reason why it matters, and what can you bring to the lesson. And what you expect to learn. Who wants to start?"

OOC: Whoever starts has permission to say that Dorian picked on them to answer. I won't post until a few people volunteer, so he can give one major comment about them.)

Amerix listened closely as the professor began speaking. She did not want to miss a thing and she sincerely hoped to do well in her classes. When the professor began asking questions, Amerix debated within herself if she should answer. She had the desire to do so but she didn't know how to answer and she couldn't work up the courage to raise her hand. Would participation be considered in their grades? Amerix had no idea. Still, it would be better to be on the safe side. But what if she gave the wrong answer? Well, she would just have to risk that.

Gathering resolve and summoning up every ounce of bravery in her, she raised a hand and with bated breath waited until the professor called on her. When he did pick her, she had to take a breath to calm her racing heart.

"I think that it is important to learn combat because Aurors are required to be able to catch Dark wizards or witches and that involves some form of dueling to be successful. I er.. I don't have much experience in combat but I am willing to work hard and learn to the best of my ability. I um..expect to learn how to strategize as well as some dueling techniques," Amerix said hoping within her heart that her reply was sufficient and answered the questions. It would not do to embarrass herself in front of her classmates and professor. In all honesty, she was very uncomfortable with saying what she expected from the class. She felt like she was telling the professor what to do and that made her insides squirm around.

Straight forward and to the point. That was how Professor Ashworth usually started lessons, and Brooke enjoyed the change from chatty Hogwarts Professors. It wasn't that she didn't like those - she herself loved conversing with people - but rather, the setting of it all just seemed apt, somehow. Listening intently to what he said, she nodded along with his words.

Wanting to go first, but at the same time not sure what she wanted to say, she was somewhat glad when Amerix volunteered to go, and she took in every word the witch said. A few moments after she had finished, Brooke looked around and then raised her hand, noting that nobody else seemed to want to go.

After being told to continue, she suddenly realized she still didn't know what to say. Hiding a wry smile, Brooke took a breath and decided to wing it; she did her best thinking out loud, anyway. "While Amerix has mentioned duelling with spells, and magic, sometimes it is also needed to fight Muggle style." She paused, trying to come up with a scenario when this would be possible, but drew a blank and instead continued with, "In these cases, it is important to also know some form of Muggle combat, to minimize exposure of magic if in a Muggle area, or if for whatever reason, wands cannot be used."

Skipping the harder question for the time being, she went on to answer the last. "I expect to learn how to, well, fight, obviously," she started, then flushed a little at the choice of words. Sarcasm was not a good way to talk to a Professor, even if the answer was obvious. "As in, learn how to duel when in stressful situations as well as learn some styles of Muggle fighting... And uh, all the in betweens, too." Honestly, she had so many expectations and ideas for this class that she didn't know where to start or where to end.

"As for me.." she hesitated, bringing her hands together in front and intersecting them, twiddling her thumbs; she did this without realizing, too lost in thought. "I will bring myself to the lesson." Again she stopped, wondering how she was even going to begin explaining what she meant. Why did she always have to have such complicated answers? Because I'm complicated, she thought dryly, then realized she should probably be speaking. "What I mean is, what I have - all I have - in me, I will bring. As much courage as I have... As much confidence as I have... As much strength I have... Me. I'll bring me..." Trailing of lamely, she let out a breath and smiled slightly at Professor Ashworth.

Hopefully he would understand her, because at the current moment, Brooke herself could not figure out what the hell she was saying - she knew what she meant but her words had not made sense in the least to her. Looking at the ground, she stopped an eye roll. Wonderful job, Brooke, just wonderful, she mentally groaned. But she knew later on, she would laugh about her awkwardness, when everything was said and done, because that was just her.

Airen listened as the professor told the class what he expected. The list of questions he asked were demanding, but Airen thought he had to be sometimes. Auror training was no simple walk in the park. The question that most confounded him was what could he bring to the lesson. Obviously, he could hold his own and perhaps achieve some modicum victory in a crossing of blades, but he didn't know how useful that would be. This was work with a wand mostly, how could a sword hold up to a spell that could banish it from the owner?

Airen listened as Amerix listed off her own answers to the professor's questions. She covered the basic answers, and Airen mentally agreed with her answers. Then, when Brooke volunteered to answer, he listened as she added onto Amerix's earlier statements. Agreeing with her own statements, Airen felt a bit of pity for her as she stumbled on her words towards the end. Torn between silently comforting her, and letting her recover on her own, Airen decided that since no one was laughing, he should step up and answer. He raised his hand and waited to be called on. When he was, Airen proceeded to answer.

"Sir," he addressed the professor, "combat is both a means to end conflict and a method of physical fitness and discipline. It teaches a person both how to survive a fight and also humility to know your weaknesses and improve in those areas. I wish to learn how to improve my own combat abilities, armed or otherwise. As for what I can bring to the lesson, I guess..." Airen paused, his mind still not made up as to whether or not he should reveal his swordsmanship. He didn't want to seem like he was gloating, but at the same time, he wanted to be useful.

"I can help...should the class ever want to learn...fencing or other forms of combat with a...sword..." he finished softly, looking down. The two sides of his mind offered different opinions on his choice. His logical, kind-hearted side told him that the added knowledge of how to hold one's own in a sword fight would help his comrades. His other, more self-deprecating side kept on pulling up scenarios where he would be either shunned, mocked, or simply looked at strangely and would wind up on the outside looking in. He bit the inside of his cheek and straightened himself up slightly. The damage was done, now to face the music.

The first to talk was surprisingly Miss Skye and he took her answer into consideration as she began to speak her mind. Her answer was a typical one, over all not that creative, but it was truthful. The typical answer for an Auror and he appreciate that they started off the bat with it. Smiling at her answer he figured he should give her some commentary.

"Thank you for volunteering your opinion Miss Skye, I appreciate you mentioning strategizing. It's a key part of combat, especially when you are asked to know, by the situation what the outcome needs to be. As for what you bring, I appreciate your full need to try and hope to see it as we go along."

Next was Miss Walters. His brow lifted at her sass; it was not appreciated. The first round he had liked her moxie, asking him to try out the obstacle course, but now her mouth could one day get her in trouble. He said nothing, let her keep talking but once she finished it was time.

"Very good Miss Walters, I appreciate you mentioning Muggle combat, which is something I wish for you all to learn. Your wand will not always be beside you at all times." turning back to her, his lips formed a straight line, "And I would suggest Miss Walters that you watch your mouth, I can only imagine how it could get you in trouble."

Turning back towards Mr. Sparrowhawk, he smiled immediately as he heard about sword usage. While dated, it was still a option for some, maybe smaller like a dagger, but one nonetheless. Walking over he patted his shoulder.

"His words are what you should take in. As he said, discipline is key, and Mr. Sparrowhawk, I have a feeling you will do very well in this class."

Smirking he looked back at the rest of his students and blew his whistle, signaling them to run as usual. He wanted to get their heart rates going and get the blood flowing. As they all ran off, he called out.

"Once you come back, I want you to start pushing those dummies. Do you see them? They are the exact same weight you are. Push them fifty feet, from the starting line (where placed) and to the opposing side fifty feet away. Once you are done, come back and we will begin with basic muggle combat techniques."

Airen listened to the professor's comments on each answer given. He felt a bit of pity for Brooke when the professor commented on her sass. However, he also saw how it could get people in trouble. Airen felt his face flush when the professor patted his shoulder and predicted that he would do very well in the class. While he was glad that the professor had the confidence in him to do well in this class, Airen still felt a bit uncomfortable with a sudden spotlight on him.

Needless to say, he was glad when the time came for the physical portion of the lesson. Airen immediately set off on his run. He kept a quick pace that would get his blood flowing but wouldn't drain him. He heard the professor point out the dummies that they would push, and Airen looked to the dummies. Fifty feet. Hmm... Airen thought to himself. If they weighed as much as himself, it certainly wouldn't be an easy task. However, it wouldn't be impossible either.

Completing the run, Airen made his way to the dummy furthest from him. More of a personal choice than anything else, Airen took a good look at the dummy, trying to figure out the best way to push it fifty feet. Airen set his left hand on the dummy's chest area, then he put his bent right arm over a larger area of the torso. Digging his feet into the ground, Airen began to push. I'm heavier than I thought, he smirked to himself. Keeping his footsteps firm, Airen pushed the dummy as fast as he could without getting tired. While he all but knew that he wouldn't be the first to cross the line, Airen was sure that he'd be one of the first.

Upon crossing the line, Airen straightened and made his way to the the combat arena, ready to fight.

PostSubject: Re: Auror Lesson 1 & 2: Finding Your Strengths (Auror Majors Preferred)    Auror Lesson 1 & 2: Finding Your Strengths (Auror Majors Preferred) EmptyFri Jan 23, 2015 9:49 pm

Looking on as the professor started the lesson, Christian realized that the man was, in fact, their Headmaster. He hadn't put two and two together until just now, and the realization was a bit daunting. The man he'd written to, and gotten replies from, had seemed...older? Strict. But understanding in the end. He wondered how that would play out in a class like this.

As each student took their turn answering the questions posed to them, Christian felt more uneasy. He'd done well enough in Dueling, back at Hogwarts, but not spectacular. He lacked the will to show off, or to attack first, like some of his classmates. But where he fell short in those areas, he thrived in defense. In taking hits, strength and endurance. Other than that, though, he didn't really know what he could bring to the table that would impress anyone.

Luckily, he wouldn't have to show off his lack of talent. Ashworth was moving on with the lesson, and he was grateful. He set his bag down and followed after the other boy. While he hadn't gotten to know many students here, they were becoming familiar as he saw them in all his classes.

Staying behind, but relatively in stride with the boy, Christian could feel his under-used muscles waking up for the day. In Hogwarts, he'd spent a lot of time working out, being on the Quidditch team. Naturally toned, it was easy to keep himself in shape. But after a few years with new priorities, being a supporting boyfriend...and then a single father, he'd let things slide. But as he moved through the path they were on, he felt things falling back into place.

When they rounded back to the start, his breath was a bit harsh, but nothing he couldn't work with. Walking over to one of the dummies in the middle, he focused on his own work, not others. It never did him well to compare himself to what someone else could do. He didn't want to gloat, or end of feeling bad about his own abilities.

He gave an experimental push against the dummy with both hands. Jesus Christ! He knew he was built rather solidly but...this was going to be a bit harder. Instead of going for spead, he went with what he had: strength. Leaning in, he rested his right shoulder square in the center of the torso. One foot at a time, he focused on pacing. If he kept his stride steady, he'd hopefully not tire so easily.

It was rough, but his pace held, and he got there in a rather okay time. Face flushed, he jogged lightly back to the professor when he was done. Parts of his body ached that hadn't in a very long time, but there was a faint smile on his face. It felt good.

Amerix gave a tiny smile of relief as she heard the professor comment on the answers the students had given. At least she had gotten something right. During her time at Beauxbatons, she'd never been one to voluntarily give answers for fear of getting it wrong and being humiliated in front of her peers. She didn't have self-confidence and would always doubt herself. But since coming here, she decided she would change all of that, or at least work on improving herself. Knowing that she got something right encouraged her and made her feel a little better.

She snapped back to attention at the professor's whistle and broke into a fast jog, keeping a steady pace so she wouldn't tire herself out. She wasn't the fittest girl but she wasn't that out of shape either since she'd made it a habit to do morning jogs at least three times a week. She settled into the familiar rhythm of breathing and pumping her legs as she completed the circuit.

Coming to the dummy, she stood for a while to catch her breath while she figured out the best and most effective way to push it fifty feet. Amerix didn't think it would be that heavy since she herself wasn't very heavy. She placed her left hand on the dummy's right shoulder and her right hand near his left hip. Keeping her elbows slightly bent, she used her her inner strength and whole body weight to push, taking firm steps and concentrating on moving it steadily. Before the halfway mark though, she could feel her muscles start to strain and beads of sweat forming at her hairline and making its way down the side of her face. One step at a time, Amerix. One step at a time she told herself.

Resolutely and steadily, she pushed on, ignoring the tickle of the sweat and the grumbling of her muscles. She had never been a quitter and she wasn't going to start being one. She was determined to finish this with all that she had. When it felt like she'd been pushing the dummy forever, she realised that she was almost done. With a final push, she let the dummy go and took deep breaths to calm her racing heart, feeling the ache settle in her muscles as she headed towards the professor. She'll be aching all over in the morning.

Arthur was glad the professor didn't seem to be upset by his lack of an answer. He honestly didn't know what the class would get from him and he hoped that not answering didn't effect his grade too badly. He had done some muggle self defence and wondered if he should have mentioned that.

But then the professor motioned for them to start running and he decided it was too late to worry about it. Running at a steady rhythm he wondered how he would knock the dummy down. He considered running into it as fast as he could but then he wasn't sure how much control he would have about how far it landed if he did that. And he might be too tried by the time he got to it to do any good.

Coming to the dummy he positioned his hands on its shoulders and tried to push it. I'm heavier than I thought, he thought. Gradually he did manage to push it to the correct distance although not as quickly as he would have liked to. Unsure of what his time was, he headed over to the professor for muggle combat.
