Jezika entered the classroom and took a moment to survey its layout. The workstations were arranged in neat rows so that students could work in pairs or groups if needed. She shook her head. No, this would not do at all. With a few flicks of her hand, she arranged the room to her liking so that each workstation stood alone with at least three feet between each table. With a nod of satisfaction, she headed to the teacher's desk and set her things down before turning to the board. With a few motions of her hand, words appeared in neat handwriting.

    Grand Wiggenweld Potion

She hadn't wanted to take the Healing Potions Class but upon the persuasion of the headmaster, she'd agreed rather reluctantly and picked a difficult potion to torture the students with. Its usefulness was an added bonus. With another few gestures, a neat pile of scrolls appeared on her desk, each with detailed instructions of how to make the potion. She knew the traditional method was to put the instructions on the board but she wanted to see how the students could cope with an extra item on their desk. It was a trick her old professor had used which yielded interesting results.

She stood next to her desk and returned the greetings of the students who acknowledged her. Not one to tolerate tardiness - unless the student had good reason - Jezika kept an eye on the clock. Once the minute hand hit its mark, she would lock the door and start the class.

Melody was looking forward to her first class since she'd been back. It would be good to get back into things. She gathered up her supplies into her bag and made her way to the Potions Wing.

Melody wondered what had happened to Professor Holmes when she saw the new professor. But she had the tact to know not to ask. Instead she stepped into the room and looked at the new layout. Well it wouldn't make any difference to her work.

"Hello professor." Melody sat down, set her bag underneath the desk and looked at the instructions that had been left on her desk. Interesting, she thought. She'd never attempted that potion before.

PostSubject: Re: Healing Potions Lesson 1 (All Majors)   Healing Potions Lesson 1 (All Majors) EmptySat Jul 02, 2016 12:55 am

If there was one class she dreaded, it was potions. How she had managed to pass her OWLs and NEWTS with a high enough mark to take the Auror course had not been a mystery, though - Joe had helped, far more than he would take credit for. He was probably the only reason (besides the other tutors she had) that she was able to pass. Brooke thought that would be the end of it, but upon finding out that she still had to take potions in Univeristy had come as an unexpected twist.

Still, she rose to the challenge as best as she could, doing the best she could to avoid blowing up this potions classroom. Merlin knew how many times she had done that in Hogwarts, so much so that she was forbidden from working on potions without someone more experienced than her standing beside, wand at the ready should she mess up.

Or, at least, that was the exaggerated version of what she told people. The truth was, there were a few times when Professors assigned people to watch over her, but that was only when making potions in which a mistake could lead to... well, death.

Stepping into the class, an apprehensive look on her face, she paused as she saw the Professor standing there. "Oh. Professor Fayne," she greeted, surprised. "Where's Professor Holmes?" she asked before she could help it, then hesitated, realising that her words might not have been the most tactful. Oh well, too late now. Flashing a smile nevertheless, she moved to the desk right in front, glancing at the instructions on the table and at the board. Uh oh, she thought, recognising the name of the potion as one of the more complex ones. Please don't blow it up, she told herself, pulling her bottom lip between her teeth in nervous anticipation.

While he had skill for it Arthur had never enjoyed the thought of potions class. The vision of how his father died was still fresh after all these years and a bubbling cauldron didn't help. He would compartalize like he always had, try to push the images to the darkest reaches of his mind.

"Hello professor." Arthur noted the new layout of the room and knew that he wouldn't have to find a new partner. He hadn't expected Professor Fayne to teach this class as well. Where had Professor Holmes gone?

There were two other students as well, Brooke was one he knew. He wouldn't call her a friend, but he wasn't against the idea. He just didn't know her that well and didn't know the other girl at all. Still he took a seat next to Brooke.

Arthur looked at the board and then at the instructions. He kept his face netruel but it being a difficult potion made his fears feel more founded.

PostSubject: Re: Healing Potions Lesson 1 (All Majors)   Healing Potions Lesson 1 (All Majors) EmptySat Jul 02, 2016 8:23 pm

The second year of her time in University came faster than she anticipated, but it was a good thing since it meant she was enjoying her time. By now, it had gotten out that she and Seth were an item, and so she had one less thing to worry about; her parents had stopped nagging at her in regards to boys. There had been a few reasons she picked Seth over others. The first was that he was someone she wouldn't mind going out with, simply because of his snark; he was unlike other polite and decent males, making him fun to toy with.

He was also someone who wouldn't mind playing along with this charade of theirs, and from what she had seen, he was also a good actor, unlikely to spoil the thing by blabbing or making a mistake. The other good thing about Seth was that he was studying to be a Dragoneer. With her in the Auror course, they had very minimal interactions in classes - with the exception of this one.

Potions, much like every other area of magic, was something Serafina had been trained in since young. She had no problems with the subject whatsoever. Stepping into the class, she was secretly glad to see the arrangement of the tables; she wouldn't need to share a space with the Corbett heir. The news of the departure of Professor Holmes had not been made public, but as a Pureblood she had heard the rumours. It had been talk amongst the females during the last ball attended.

It was no huge surprsie, therefore, to see someone else there. With a polite word of greeting to the witch in front, Serafina took an empty seat in the second row.

PostSubject: Re: Healing Potions Lesson 1 (All Majors)   Healing Potions Lesson 1 (All Majors) EmptySat Jul 02, 2016 10:00 pm

Sometimes, whenever Janina walked around the grounds of Merlin's, she couldn't help but marvel at how close she was to graduation. Time was like the tide—those who weren't paying attention would only be surprised and swept up by it, and Janina was never the sort to keep looking at watches, calendars and clocks. Thank Merlin she was a mermaid, even in the figurative sense. All she had to do was to stay calm, to keep swimming, and Time wouldn't be able to drown her. Nothing ever could, she had made sure of that ever since the summer before her seventh year at Hogwarts.

And now here she was, on her third year at university, so close to ending a chapter of her life and beginning a new one. Janina was beginning to feel it in her veins. There was something in the air, too, that was different, although she supposed it was just the excitement she felt over starting a new year. She had always enjoyed her Potions classes, and the fact that she was now closer to her final years in university gave her a heavy bundle of mixed feelings. Her relationship with Gabriel didn't worry her. Though they have had to deal with some fights and problems, they had managed to pull through and stay strong no matter. It wasn't the idea of being possibly unemployed that scared her, either. She was confident enough in her abilities to know that she would excel in her field. Shrugging off the cloud hovering over her head, Janina walked to class with her hands in her pockets.

Upon entering the classroom, Janina realized she didn't know anyone in this class. She had seen the short-haired blonde girl around, mostly because they were both Potioneers-in-Training (or so she thought), but everyone else was unfamiliar. It had slipped her mind that this was an All Majors class, and that she would have to deal with knowing very few people. Being surrounded by fellow Potioneers-in-Training was one thing—though she didn't know most of them, she had at least seen them enough to be comfortable around them. Students from the other departments, though, made her want to shrink into the wall farthest from the professor. It didn't matter if she pretty much slayed all of her Potions classes. These classmates were strangers, and she wasn't sure what sort of people they were.

With downcast eyes, she took a seat at the back of the classroom. To keep herself distracted, she took out her quill and notebook, hoping she wouldn't have problems with anyone in this class.

He was probably one of the youngest in his year at 21, but then again, hard work usually put one at an advantage. Besides, he didn't just have a passion for the job, but an underlying motive that pushed him to always do better and better - he wanted to get the bastards that killed his brother. The only way he could get involved with that was if he was in the auror field, and though hardly anyone knew of this ulterior motive (if they did, he might not be allowed to work for fear of him going rogue), it was still something that pushed him.

Of course, Gabriel knew where his loyalties lied, and he would never actually go against the rules. Having said that, the outcome sometimes did justify the means, although very rarely. He was usually the type to stick to rules and follow structure anyway.

Stepping into the potions class, he glanced around, recognising the people there as people from his course. His eyes, though, immediately fell on Janina, and he broke into a smile. Without so much as a hesitation, he moved to the table next to her, wishing the desks had not been separated. Nevertheless, he called out a "Good morning" to the Professor, and then flashed a smile at his girlfriend. "So far back?" he teased. "Isn't this supposed to be your strong suit?"

As per usual, Lynn arrived on time, having ensured that he would be neither early nor late—even the mere notion of being late for a potions class disgusted him.  To say that he was prepared would be an understatement: he was more than prepared; he had psyched himself up so much for this one class despite it not even being exclusive to his major; it was a miracle he had not arrived too early.  It was entirely likely that he was too eager for his own good, though being too excited was preferable to dreading it.  Lynn had waited all summer for a new potions class, one that could prove itself to be beyond the level Hogwarts had offered, beyond following textbook recipes that were nothing new—he had done brewing for years and he was tired of it, he wanted to be able to experiment, to discover, but hadn't been given the chance just yet.

Even if it is just brewing, maybe this time it'll actually be a difficult potion instead of something boring; he halted his musing as he entered the classroom, taking note of the desk arrangement and where each student was sitting, making a split-second consideration of where to sit while he walked in.  After offering a smile and a short greeting to the professor, he claimed a seat in the front, a small grin making its way onto his face as he recognized the potion named on the board—he knew the Grand Wiggenweld Potion and its lesser relative, having enjoyed that the latter changed colors in an almost rainbow way.  If all went as it should, he would be able to make it just fine.

Amerix dragged herself to the dungeons for the mandatory potions class, her mouth set in a grim line. Potions, though not her favourite subject, was one class she could handle. It did not require much physical work, just some mental concentration. After a long day of physical classes, she was more than prepared for a rest potions would offer her. Sure, her mental state wasn't all that better than her physical one but at least concentrating on making the potion would take her mind off other less pleasant topics.

She trudged into the room and allowed herself a moment of surprise when she saw her Stealth and Infiltration professor standing in the front of the classroom. It was no secret that there was a big change in the staff and professors of the academy but she hadn't expected to see Professor Fayne teaching potions. She murmured a greeting to the professor and made her way to one of the desks at the side of the room, avoiding everybody's eyes as she sat down. She wasn't in the mood for socialisation and just wanted the day to be over.

Her eyes took in the words on the board and she groaned internally. She'd made the Wiggenweld Potion before and remembered how tedious it was to watch for the correct colour change. Going by the name written on the board, there was no doubt this would be more difficult. She sighed, closed her eyes and rested her head on the table, needing all the strength she could get to keep her concentration up for the duration of the class and praying to whoever heard prayers that she wouldn't slip and blow the whole classroom up.

It was another year at university and Ceyal was eternally grateful that the holiday was over. He'd gone back to London to visit the couple who'd raised him after his mother's death. Although he wasn't close with them, he knew he owed them his life. If it hadn't been for their compassion, he'd probably end up a beggar or in one of those orphanages. He knew this, and to show it, he stayed with them for a week and helped out in every way he could; he changed light bulbs, re-painted the house, exhausted his patience trying to teach them how to use a laptop and fixed the plumbing amongst other things.

He tried to tell himself that seeing Mr. and Mrs. Abbott was the main reason for his return to London. In all honesty, he'd gone back to see if he could dig up any new information about his sister. There was nothing. He called up all the orphanages in Vancouver, describing his sister to the best of his abilities. But a three month old baby and and ten-year-old girl was quite different. One day. One day he would find her and he wouldn't stop until he did.

He stalked into the classroom, congratulating himself once more on his perfect timing. He hated being one of the first few students to arrive in a classroom, preferring instead to come just when the professor was about to start the class and leave immediately after. It was a habit he'd consciously honed to keep himself as invisible as possible.

He nodded a greeting to the professor and took a seat.

Brandon literally sprinted to class, skidding around corners and almost tripping over his feet in an effort to get to class on time. It was fortunate that he was athletic and didn't exhaust quickly. Still, his lungs burned with the need for air. Why in Merlin's name did potions have to be in the dungeons? And why in Merlin's name did the academy have to have so many corridors? He was sure he'd passed the same spot at least twice and now, after getting a pointer from a passing student, was finally on the right track. Hopefully.

Spotting and open classroom door, he increased his speed and skidded to a halt in the doorway, holding onto the wall to keep himself from falling and pausing to catch his breath. "I'm...sorry...I'm...late," he panted, one hand on his chest. "Got..lost." He turned his eyes to the professor and injected as much of a puppy dog look as he could into his gaze. He wasn't technically late but he was quite sure that turning up a panting mess didn't do anything good for first impressions.

He stayed where he was until he could talk normally again. "Brandon Everett at your service, ma'am," he introduced himself, offering his hand for her to shake. Once that was done, took up an empty seat and read what was on the board, frowning a little as he did so. He knew the potion but hadn't made it before. This would be a challenging class but Brandon was determined to do his best.

PostSubject: Re: Healing Potions Lesson 1 (All Majors)   Healing Potions Lesson 1 (All Majors) EmptyThu Jul 14, 2016 3:11 am

This was one class she didn't need to worry about in terms of magic, and following instructions was easy. Precision was even easier for her, since she was used to having to do things very accurately to either be understood or followed. An additional jerk of a hand could bring entirely new meanings to what she was saying, and facial expressions were also vital to understanding what she said. Potions, therefore, was something that she could do with ease.

Stepping into the class, she noted the Professor standing there, and made her way to the front of the room, piece of paper already in hands. With a gentle smile on her face, she waited for the Professor to notice her, and handed her the note. "Hi," it read. "My name is Amber. I'm Deaf. I do not expect special attention or favors; however, I will not be able to hear you or respond to you verbally. Please do not think I am ignoring you or disobeying any orders. You can ask me questions or give me instructions by writing. Smile"

It was the standard speech, and she had already handwritten twenty copies of those for any of her Professors. She waited to be acknowledged before moving to a desk and taking her seat. The potion on the board wasn't an easy one, but one she knew she could do.

PostSubject: Re: Healing Potions Lesson 1 (All Majors)   Healing Potions Lesson 1 (All Majors) EmptyThu Jul 14, 2016 3:45 am

Jezika raised an eyebrow at the boy who came in panting like a dog dying of thirst. She understood that as a first year, it was difficult to get around the academy but that only meant that the student should take the effort to learn his way around in his free time. She nodded to acknowledge his apology. "Just don't let it happen again." At his introduction, she couldn't help but let the corner of her mouth quirk up in a smile. She'd never had a student introduce himself the way he did. Taking his hand, she smiled. "Professor Jezika or Professor Fayne will do," she responded.

The next student came and she read the note. Now, here was a student to be admired. Jezika especially noted that Amber did not expect to be given special treatment and she respected her for that. It wouldn't be difficult to give her piece of paper and charm a quill to write down what she said word for word. She nodded to acknowledge she'd read and understood the note. She picked up a quill from her desk and wrote a note on the parchment. Take this to your desk. The quill will write down what I say. Then she charmed the quill and handed both items to Amber.

Once the minute hand of the clock reached home, Jezika waved her hand, slamming the door shut and charming it so that nothing - and no one else but she - could open it. She took her work seriously though Blake had tried many times to tell her to lighten up more. Taking a moment, she surveyed the students who had turned up for her class and noted that some were new and some were into their third or fourth year. The older students should have no problem with the potion but the younger ones might struggle a little more.

"Good morning, class," she greeted. "For those of you who do not know, I'm Professor Fayne and I'll be taking this class temporarily until a more permanent professor can be found for the position." She paused for a short moment to make sure she had the students' attention before continuing. "The Grand Wiggenweld Potion is very useful and is an antidote to the Draught of the Living Death which is a potion that induces sleep. It's the more powerful version of the Wiggenweld Potion and has an extra two ingredients to it."

With another gesture, she sent the scrolls floating to each of the students and waited until they landed on the desk. "You will find instructions for the potion in the scroll. Please try not to destroy the scroll in the process of making the potion. After you've completed the potion, please take out a sample in a vial and place it on my desk. If you don't have any questions, you may begin," she instructed.

PostSubject: Re: Healing Potions Lesson 1 (All Majors)   Healing Potions Lesson 1 (All Majors) EmptyThu Jul 14, 2016 6:35 am

Arthur watched the door as people came to class. When Amerix came through he couldn't help noticing how different she looked. So much more frail and thinner. He was careful not to stare and wondered if he should ask her what was wrong, assuming he managed to catch her later of course. Drawing attention to her in class would hardly be helpful.

Technically Brandon wasn't late. Class hadn't started yet. Arthur hadn't expected Brandon to be so formal. Most people would have just said a greeting to the Professor and then taken a seat.

He wondered why the professor had given the woman a piece of parchment and a quill. Surely they wouldn't be expected to write down the potion. It must have had something to do with the piece of paper she had given the professor.

Arthur carefully unrolled and read the scroll. Then he set it aside before grabbing the cauldron beside his desk. He was careful not to knock the scroll over when putting the cauldron on top.

Then he went to get the rest of the items needed. While he was boiling Horklump juice over medium heat he measured out the salamander blood.

After putting the salamander blood in he grabbed the ladle and stirred until it was fully red. He noted how the colour started out in spots.

Then he used a spoon to get out one measure of sloth brain mucus. It made a gross squelching sound. He added it to the potion and stirred until it was orange.

Arthur measured out half a cup of salamander blood before adding it in and stirring anti-clockwise. The 15 minutes it would take to boil gave him time to crush the Chizpurfle fangs and half a unicorn horn into a fine power. He added 5 drops of Boom Berry juice, 7 drops of Moondew juice and a sprig of mint. Once setting the mixture aside he measured out half a cup of salamander blood.

The 15 minutes were up so he added the blood and stirred until it turned green. Then he added three measures of octopus powder. Salamander blood was poured in until the potion turned turquoise.

He remembered the time he had watched his father pour liquid into a potion until it turned turquoise and was filled with a sense of grief before he could push the feeling aside. He wasn't about to get emotional in the middle of class.

After 8 minutes he added the mixture. Arthur turned the heat up until the potion turned indigo. Stirring clockwise he used his other hand to add salamander blood until it turned pink.

He added one stewed mandrake and heated it until it turned red. This too brought forth sad memories, now that the memories were surfacing it was hard to stop that particular one. The one of his father dying. He knew that there could be things out in the field once he was an Auror that would bring up the memory but he doubted anything would do it as well as making potions did.

He added 5 lionfish spines just in time, mentally kicking himself for getting distracted. Then he heated it until it turned yellow. Flobberworm mucus was dropped in until the potion turned purple.

It was left to boil for 12 minutes while he scrapped out one measure of Billywig sting slime. Once the time was up he added it in and stirred until the potion turned red.

At least I'm mostly done now. The last of the flobberworm mucus was added in, turning the potion orange. Then 4 wolfsbane flowers were added, he stirred until it turned yellow and then stirred in the opposite direction until it turned orange.

Honey water was added until it turned turquoise. Then he heated it until it turned pink before using salamander blood to turn it green.

He turned the heat to high and bit down the flare of panic he felt while smothering the flame out. He put a sample into a vial and put the vial on top of the professor's desk. Arthur hoped that no one had noticed the moments his emotions over took him.
