It was one of those days where everything that could go wrong did. For one thing she found herself working a double-shift when it was clear that they were severely understaffed the most busy day of the week: Friday. It was awful; from the afternoon shift, she found herself then picking the dinner rush. Her feet were throbbing yet she kept a tight smile on her face, never once signaling her pain of any kind. It was only when the restaurant closed at 2 am that she allowed her annoyance to show. That night she had been too tired to even fathom going home. She simply asked to stay in one of the cots in the back.

Morning arrived and she found herself heading to the beach rather than home. It was a sad realization that she had very little to arrive home to. Her friends were either married or too busy working themselves to make time for her. She didn't blame them; she didn't have much to share really. She missed those days when life wasn't so complicated and she was able to take life in stride. She was getting old too; those dreams she once had seemed less and less tangible the older she got. She sighed. She just took comfort in being alone in the chill that came with the morning. She could only hope that life was just making her struggle only to later make it smooth sailing. She doubted it, but she supposed she never stopped dreaming.

Although Will was living a human life, there was no denying the true nature of him being well, not-human. There would always be a temptation of the sea. Perhaps he was some kind of masochist because the temptation was strong. It was a tug on his magical core, like a rope was tied around his heart was slowly dragging him out of the typical human life. It was an urging, not a yearning, to go out to sea. After twelve years dealing with it, he could ignore the pull. This urging occurred whenever he was just walking near bodies of water.

You can just imagine the struggle when he actually went swimming.

Regardless, most days, to appease the inner-being within him he went for runs by the sea. In his ears he could hear the movements of the sea; of beings awakening from slumber, creatures slipping into slumber, the beckoning of mermaids ceasing to sleep in the day. He loved the sounds of the ocean, more than the usual human as his whole self belonged to the ocean.

As usual, when Will woke up he ate a quick breakfast of a bagel and coffee, slipped into some usual running clothes; sweats and a tight thermal jacket with running shoes. He ran the whole way from the apartments to the Laguna Beach where he ran along the shore, listening the sweet sounds of creatures moving in the sea. He was running at a sedate pace, just trying to catch the breeze when he saw another figure on the beach. He slowed and stared at the figure with furrowed brows. She didn't look dangerous, and despite her appearance being unnaturally pretty (making Will question if she too was a selkie or mermaid that got washed up ashore) he didn't feel the pull of a creature greater than a witch. He jogged closer until he was about a foot away, to the side of so not to block her view of the ocean.

"Good morning," he greeted, smiling "mind some company?" He added: "I can leave if you want to be alone, but your face is-" he winced as he realized it might be overstepping a boundary, but his face turned apologetic, "your face is sad ma'am, I'm sorry if that's a bit blunt, but you look like you need someone to talk to. And despite all this blathering, I'm a quite good listener." He gave her a wan smile, hoping maybe a bit of his selkie magic would convince her to let him hang around.

Were mornings always this chilly? She shivered slightly as the breeze picked droplets from the sea and threw them towards her face. At least she knew she was alive. She wondered how it all went wrong. Perhaps it was in her need to be independent. Tess was determined to never asked for help even in the most dire of times. Her friends were all very similar anyway: vocal, extroverted, hard working and united. They were social people that enjoyed being around one another. And for those handful that didn't...their introverted self took life in stride when it came to their own lives. They had things to do, life moved on.

Tess lifted her hand up to her face to move some loose strands from her face. Since when had it bothered her to be alone? She used to enjoy it all the time, that is until she slowly started letting people in. First one person, and that person was good enough for her for years. Then she grew weak and sought out love. Love always ruined everything. And now at nearly twenty, she found herself realizing she hadn't really lived. In her worry to get things right, to be the best she'd lost her chances of having fun. She was too embarrassed to ask her friends how they were, too stubborn to admit she missed them. After all the real fear came when they didn't miss her.

Her thoughts were interrupted as she heard someone approaching. She grew a bit flustered on the inside once she realized that she was barefoot, her face devoid of makeup, and her hair messy from the wind. As it was a young man, her eyes were wary as he walked up to her. It would be in her moment of self wallowing that she caught someone's attention.

As he greeted her and asked if he could stay, she was going to immediately shoot it down. That is...until he said that comment. She dug her hands in the sand and felt her cheeks flush in surprise to realize she no longer hid emotions as well as she should. Before a smirk would fix it all, a sharp remark would send people running but her bite was gone. Looking up at him and tilted her head.

"I should hex you for your insolence," she murmured, "But you can sit. I can't promise I'll share much or if anything at all. After all there is not much to tell"
