Arthur wasn't sure why they even had telescopes up here. He couldn't think of which class would use them. He supposed it didn't really matter. Star gazing was something that he used to do at Hogwarts both for Astronomy lessons and an effort to improve his ability to see into the future and later because he had learned to like it.

Maybe he should send for his own telescope from home but for now this one would do. It was a beautiful night, plenty of stars to see. He briefly thought back to his Astronomy lessons and his efforts to see his future though the stars. Why could he see the future if he couldn't do anything important with it? Why didn't it come more natural for him to see it? He pushed those questions out of his head. There was no reason to ruin a lovely night dwelling on things.

He heard footsteps coming up the tower but didn't turn around. Whoever they were, he hoped they wouldn't mind that they weren't alone on the tower. He'd hate to ruin someone's night.

It was late and his dorm mate had been asleep ages ago, but James, having always been a night owl, was not quite ready for bed just yet. Despite it being almost midnight, he decided that he would go for a walk, explore the University a bit more. Already a week into lessons, he had caught up with all his extra homework and assignments, and as such was more free to do his own things at night, rather than work.

Closing the door to his room quietly, he debated going out to the grounds, but finally decided against it; who knew what creatures lurked around the area at night. At least at Hogwarts the knowledge was there: thestrals and the like, but here, in a new setting, practically anything could be out there! Moving towards the Astronomy towers that he had claimed as his private space, seeing as nobody else really went there, he clambered up the staircase.

Stepping out into the fresh cool air, he took a deep breath and smiled to himself. The skies were clear - remarkably so - and already he could see the sparking jewels that seemingly danced against their dark backdrop, mere hints of the vast universe that lay beyond the earth. Stepping forward to get a better view, he caught sight of some movement on his left and turned sharply, realizing for the first time that he wasn't alone.

A man, a fellow auror in training, stood there, and James offered a tentative smile. It seemed he wasn't the only one who was awake. "Couldn't sleep?" he asked casually, not really minding the company.

    "Couldn't sleep?"

The question was what made Arthur turn around. "I wasn't tired," he answered. "What about you?" If he had ever met the guy before he couldn't recall it. Some would say that meeting people was part of the academy experience. At any rate it didn't hurt to be nice.

Maybe he had come here for star gazing too. There were plenty of telescopes to go around if he wanted one. Arthur certainly didn't mind although he hadn't been counting on meeting anyone this late at night. It was a good night for star gazers, plenty of stars in the sky could be seen in the sky, maybe because Merlin's Academy was so far away from anything muggle. Although electronics were handy, the light pollution some places had wasn't.

The answer that came proved James' theory right and he nodded. "Same. I've never really been the kind to need lots of hours." No other questions came and he was more than happy to just let the silence settle. While he did enjoy conversation and making new friends, he also knew how to appreciate the peace and beauty of just being still. And tonight was most definitely a night that required that mind set. From their positions on the tower, they had not only a full view of the skies above, but a birds eye view of the University grounds.

James' eyes wandered across the dark and shadowy lands, lit up only by the crescent shaped moon; the stars were too far away to lend any of their brightness. Towards the right, the lake sat, water perfectly still, a mirror image of the dark blanket above with all it's glittering wonder. Tiny ripples were the only disturbance that proved it was not the real thing, caused by whatever creatures hid under the depths.

Losing track of time, James finally blinked himself out of the spell tha had been cast and altered his gaze to the man next to him. "I'm James, by the way. I've seen you in auror class before," he said quietly, so as not to startle him.

Arthur noted that James seemed to have lost attention before finally introducing himself. He could hardly blame him on a night like this there was so much to see, one could easily lose track of things while viewing it.

It hadn't clicked that he had seen him at auror class until James mentioned it. He should have realized it sooner but there was no point dwelling on that. He recognized him now at least.

"I'm Arthur," he replied. He thought back to the auror class. "It was a tough first lesson." Not that he had really expected the professor to go easy on them. He hadn't had any doubts that auror training was going to be tough, he just hoped that he was ready for it.
